Tips to Alleviate Aches and Pains While Traveling

Got upcoming travel plans? Prepare yourself and feel a lot better with some tips to alleviate aches, pains, and discomfort during your trip. Before you travel, visit our chiropractor at Atlantic Chiropractic and Rehabilitation in Chesapeake to learn more.

Plane Pains

Traveling by plane can be exhausting, and you may arrive at your destination sore and tired. Consider some tips before and during air travel that may help you stay limber and comfortable:

For long flights, take time out to stretch.

Invest in support pillows to take with you; make sure one will fit and adjust to your neck and shoulders.

Check any bags that are too heavy to carry on without subsequent aches and pains. Many estimate this to be around 10% of your own weight.

Be careful lifting bags to put in the overhead bins; take time to lift without straining your neck by twisting or turning.

Move around in your seat during the flight to increase blood flow and circulation in your legs and feet. This will help avoid cramping.

Give yourself a hand or foot massage during the flight; don’t worry about what other passengers think!

Avoid sitting directly under the air to prevent aches from a draft.

Driving Discomfort

If your trip is by car or train, maintain a proper posture that supports you ergonomically. This is particularly important if you are driving or sitting upright in a vehicle. Some other tips include:

Bring your favorite pillows for back support during long hauls.

Adjust your seat so you are sitting close to the steering wheel if you are driving. This eliminates stress and strain from reaching toward the wheel.

Invest in back support that can be easily added to and removed from seats in your vehicle.

Stretch your toes and tighten calves during long drives to help reduce swelling and cramping.

Take frequent breaks to stretch your legs and give your eyes a rest during the trip.

Cruising Comfort

Going on a cruise? Bring your own pillows to ensure you have the necessary support when sleeping in your cabin. Also, take time to attend a yoga class or indulge in a massage during your cruise; this may help alleviate an ache or pain until you can see your Chesapeake chiropractor.

  • ""I first came to Atlantic Chiropractic 5 years ago with a pinched nerve in my neck. I was in so much pain, I could not even move my head. Dr. Eric diagnosed the problem almost immediately and confirmed it with the EMG. He set up a treatment plan and told me I probably would not feel significant relief for a good two weeks. I appreciated his thoroughness, expertise, and honesty. As it turned out, I was actually pain free in one week! I always refer my friends to Dr. Eric/Atlantic Chiropractic and Rehabilitation for the most trusted effective chiropractic care.""
