Chiropractic Care FAQs
By restoring optimal functioning of the nervous system through a variety of chiropractic wellness procedures, Dr. Eric Santjer, DC of the Atlantic Chiropractic and Rehabilitation also relieves many musculoskeletal ailments that cause pain, inflammation and debilitating stiffness.
As an established and well-known chiropractor in Chesapeake, Dr. Santjer, DC expertly eliminates interference within the nervous system typically precipitated by misaligned spinal vertebrae. When the spine is not perfectly aligned, nerves endings are irritated by intense pressure resulting from discs that have slipped out of place. Consequently, overall health is diminished due to compromised immune system functioning and widespread inflammation.
How often should I visit for chiropractic care?
Depending on your particular condition, we recommend visiting our clinic three times annually, or at the doctor's discretion,
Is receiving treatment (massage and/or chiropractic) covered by insurance?
We take most medical insurances. However, the amount of insurance benefits available to cover your treatment may vary. To help you navigate the complexities of submitting insurance forms, we will be glad to help you fill out and submit insurance documents.
When is an adjustment and/or massage procedure not recommended?
Spinal adjustments and manipulation involves Dr. Santjer, DC applying pressure to specific areas of the spine using his hands or a chiropractic device to move vertebrae into their correct positions. Unless a patient is suffering from an unusually severe condition, adjustments and massages often promote healing and pain relief for many health problems ranging from simple back pain to whiplash and hernias.
Are chiropractic and massage treatments safe during pregnancy?
According to the American Pregnancy Association, research has not found any contraindications to pregnant women seeking chiropractic care for relief of lower back pain, leg pain and other pregnancy-related health issues.
What conditions do you treat?
Chiropractic wellness begins with aligning the spine through a procedure called an adjustment and manipulation. To correct spinal subluxation, our experienced chiropractor performs this treatment by manually massaging and manipulating all areas of the spine so that displaced vertebrae return to their proper positions. This eliminates pressure on spinal nerves and allows the body's natural healing abilities to reduce pain and inflammation responsible for many health problems.
Adjustments are not painful but you may hear a cracking sound called "joint cavitation" that indicates your chiropractor has successfully released a buildup of gases within spinal joints, specifically nitrogen and oxygen. When these gases are released during joint cavitation, pressure is reduced within the joint which leads to the dissolution of gases and the emergence of a "bubble". The popping sound heard is simply the bubble collapsing and the joint returning to normal--but without the accumulation of pain-causing gases.
As a full service chiropractic and rehabilitation center, we also offer chiropractic/massage therapy treatments that can help alleviate high blood pressure, sinusitis, arthritis and a host of other health problems without using expensive prescription medications.
