Acid Reflux

If you've had heartburn or discomfort after eating a heavy meal, then you've probably suffered from acid reflux and understand the condition. An occasional bout of indigestion is not uncommon, and almost everybody will suffer from occasional bouts throughout their lives. Chronic or persistent cases of acid reflux are signs of something other than having dined well, though. If the symptoms continue, it is very likely that gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, has set in. GERD is a more serious condition that, if not treated, can lead to more difficult and dangerous health issues.

.

Atlantic Chiropractic and Rehab Clinic in Chesapeake, Virginia can address the symptoms of acid reflux with chiropractic care.

What Is Acid Reflux?

Acid reflux, whether occasional or due to GERD, involves the stomach's digestive acid seeping back up into the esophagus, where it causes burning and discomfort to the esophageal lining.

In a healthy body with a normal digestive process, the stomach produces acids, including hydrochloric acid, to reduce food into chemical nutrients that can be absorbed by our cells. The stomach's contents are kept in place by a valve, known as the esophageal sphincter, which allows food to proceed in only one direction.

How Can a Chiropractor Help Acid Reflux?

Misalignments of the body can sometimes cause the esophageal sphincter to weaken and allow food and stomach acid to move in the wrong direction. Similarly, a hiatal hernia can sometimes develop. In such cases, a bit of the stomach protrudes up through the esophagus, holding the valve more or less continually open.

The usual medical treatment for acid reflux ranges from over-the-counter antacids, designed to neutralize stomach acids, to more powerful prescription medication. These medicines often have side effects and can lead to osteoporosis, kidney disease, and vitamin deficiencies. Also, antacids and medication treat only the symptoms and do not fix the underlying problem.

Chiropractic care is designed to take a more holistic approach and can afford GERD sufferers substantial relief. A chiropractor can look at a patient's diet and help find a healthier, well-balanced menu, reducing the likelihood of acid reflux caused by indigestion. Similarly, if the acid reflux is caused by a hernia or other difficulties in the esophagus, we can perform a series of stomach adjustments designed to place the stomach lining back where it belongs, thus allowing the esophagus to seal normally.

  • ""I first came to Atlantic Chiropractic 5 years ago with a pinched nerve in my neck. I was in so much pain, I could not even move my head. Dr. Eric diagnosed the problem almost immediately and confirmed it with the EMG. He set up a treatment plan and told me I probably would not feel significant relief for a good two weeks. I appreciated his thoroughness, expertise, and honesty. As it turned out, I was actually pain free in one week! I always refer my friends to Dr. Eric/Atlantic Chiropractic and Rehabilitation for the most trusted effective chiropractic care.""
