The human
spine has 23 cartilaginous spinal discs between the vertebrae. They act as a
system of shock absorbers for when we sit, walk, stand, twist, bend, run
and jump. Inside each disc is a jelly-like substance known as the nucleus
pulposus. A spinal disc might become displaced from any number of accidents or
injuries. It might also become herniated. That's when the nucleus pulposus
leaks out of the disc. The two terms are often used interchangeably. In either
case, the condition or injury can be extremely painful and even debilitating.
Here at Atlantic Chiropractic and Rehabilitation in Chesapeake, VA, we treat patients for both bulging disc and herniated disc conditions.
Bulging and Herniated Disc Symptoms
Most disc injuries are at the neck (cervical spine) level or the lower back (lumbar spine) level. At the cervical spine level, patients often complain of neck pain and discomfort with loss of range of motion and headaches.
A serious cervical spine bulge or herniation will carry across the neck, into a shoulder, down an arm, and into a hand. Numbness, tingling, and weakness are often also present. The same types of symptoms are often experienced by patients with serious lumbar disc bulges or herniation except without headaches. Pain will originate in the lower spine and carry across the back, into the buttocks, and down one leg, often into a foot.
Chiropractic Treatment of a Bulging or Herniated Disc
Treatment by our chiropractor is a preferred method of caring for a bulging or herniated disc without the potential adverse effects of medications or the very real risks of surgery. Our chiropractor is extensively trained in getting bulging or herniated discs back where they're intended to be while relieving pressure from nearby nerves.
Chiropractic techniques, when coupled with adjunct therapies like massage, electronic muscle stimulation, or ultrasound, are highly effective, and they're intended to get you discharged from care and treatment at our clinic as soon as possible.
Our chiropractor will take a history from you and examine you. He will isolate the cause of your pain and discomfort and treat that cause and not the symptoms. Our goal is to relieve or eliminate your pain and discomfort and improve or restore your range of motion and mobility. The sooner you come to see us after your symptoms begin, the easier it will be to treat their cause.
