From Our Chiropractor: Three Tips to Improve Posture

Although you were probably taught how to practice good posture as a child, several daily activities negatively affect posture, undoing all of the hard work you did while your spine was still growing. Prolonged sitting, driving, phone conversations, or carrying a child can all throw your posture out of balance. Our chiropractor offers the following three tips to improve your posture on a daily basis.

1. Maintain Balance - A balanced posture means that each side of the body supports the same amount of weight. When standing, distribute your weight evenly between both feet. In a seated position, use the chair to align your body: ears, shoulders, hips, and feet in front of you. Consciously engage your abdominal muscles to ease your back muscles. A balanced seated posture also means no more crossing legs, as this will unevenly distribute your weight, putting added stress on one side of your body.

2. Take a Break - We often droop into a slouch or fall over into a hunch when our muscles become tired from holding our bodies in a single position. Shift your seated position from the front of your chair to the back or vice versa. If you have the time, take a ten minute break to walk around and stretch. Going easy on your muscles will help you avoid the pain and stiffness associated with poor posture.

3. Ergonomics - Look for items specially designed to support a healthy posture. Whether it be an office chair that fits your body, a recliner, or a special mattress, ergonomically designed furniture make a world of difference when it comes to posture.
