Chiropractic Tips for Posture Improvement

Best Practices from Our Chesapeake Chiropractors

Poor posture can caused by spinal misalignment, weak muscles in the back or abdomen, incorrect footwear or poor workplace ergonomics. Here are some posture improvement tips:

Evaluate your posture. If you can learn to be aware of your posture, you can prevent bad habits from continuing. Ask yourself whether you are placing equal weight on both feet when you stand, and try to maintain an imaginary vertical line running from your head down to your hips. At work, make sure your work posture does not cause neck pain or low back pain from the constant need to bend awkwardly or hunch over a desk.

Strengthen yourself. Simple back and abdominal exercises can help provide support to the spinal column, allowing you to maintain a straighter posture for longer periods of time. This practice can also make you less prone to back injuries.

Change your position. Sitting or standing in one position for a long period of time can cause muscle strain, back or neck pain, and foot fatigue. Make a point of shifting in your chair, standing up or walking around so other muscle groups can temporarily take over.

Pay attention to your feet. Good posture depends partly on the way your feet interact with the floor to support and distribute your weight. When sitting, make sure both feet can remain flat on the floor. When standing or walking, use shoes that give your arches plenty of cushion and support. Also, ladies should watch out for high heels, which can throw your upper body backward and create low back pain.
