Proper Ways To Shovel Snow
There are some of us who don’t mind the cold and snow that comes with the winter season, but others see it as a literal pain in the neck … the back, the knees, and just about everywhere else.
Maybe it’s because we only get a few months of the year to ‘practice’, but shoveling snow requires a real technique to avoid back pain and other injuries.
Here at Atlantic Chiropractic and Rehabilitation - your chiropractor in Chesapeake, Virginia - Dr. Eric Santjer can help you learn the proper way to shovel snow and prevent this household chore from leaving you in a world of hurt.
When Shoveling Snow, It's All About the Lift
You've probably heard the same advice a thousand times, but it's worth repeating. When it comes to shoveling snow, lift with your legs and not your back. That small bit of wisdom and these other tips can mean all the difference.
According to the National Safety Council:
- Square your hips and shoulders and face the snow you intend to shovel.
- Bend at the hips and not the lower back.
- Keep up with the snow as it's falling. Don't wait for a big snowstorm to end and then try to clear everything at once.
- Because you'll likely need to lift instead of push, don't fill your shovel all the way.
When to See the Chiropractor This Winter
Seeing our chiropractor should lessen the chances of developing new back problems or worsening your knee pain or shoulder pain while shoveling. But with that being said, shoveling is definitely one of the activities that can exacerbate existing health problems or create new ones.
Dr. Santjer might advise you on various stretches or ways to warm up your cold muscles before shoveling. He might also recommend gentle exercises to loosen up your arms and shoulders.
