Top 5 Most Common Symptoms of Sciatica

Top 5 Symptoms of Sciatica

People usually associate sciatica with lower back and leg pain. It is true that those are among the most common symptoms. But they are far from the only signs that you may be suffering from this uncomfortable condition. Learn more about the 5 most common ways people experience sciatica symptoms.

1: Lower Body Pain

Patients generally feel sciatica symptoms in the lower back, buttocks, the back of the thighs and calves, the feet, and sometimes, toes. The most commonly reported sensation in these areas is pain that impacts one side of the lower body. The severity ranges from mild discomfort to a dull ache to severe and debilitating. It may come on right away and leave just as quickly or linger for days, weeks, or months.

2: Burning or Shooting Sensation

Many sciatica sufferers describe their symptoms as burning or shooting pain. It starts in the lower back or read end and “shoots” down the back of one leg. This severe pain typically occurs after sitting for long periods.

3: Numbness and Tingling

While pain is the more unwelcome symptom of sciatica, you may experience other unpleasant sensations, as well. Those include numbness, tingling, and a “pins and needles” prickling in your lower back, rear, leg, foot, or toes. Though not painful, these sensations are unfamiliar and can cause discomfort and restrict movement.

4: Weakness in Your Lower Limbs

Does one of your legs feel weak or heavy? The sensation may extend to your foot or perhaps your toes. The compression of your L5 sciatic nerve can cause foot weakness.

5: Discomfort Changing Position

Moving from a sitting to standing position can be extremely painful, making it exceedingly difficult to do. Many patients also have more severe pain when they cough, bend over or turn their bodies to the side.

  • ""I first came to Atlantic Chiropractic 5 years ago with a pinched nerve in my neck. I was in so much pain, I could not even move my head. Dr. Eric diagnosed the problem almost immediately and confirmed it with the EMG. He set up a treatment plan and told me I probably would not feel significant relief for a good two weeks. I appreciated his thoroughness, expertise, and honesty. As it turned out, I was actually pain free in one week! I always refer my friends to Dr. Eric/Atlantic Chiropractic and Rehabilitation for the most trusted effective chiropractic care.""
