What is Scoliosis and How is it Treated?

Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine whereby the spine curves to the left, to the right, or both. It takes on the shape of an 'S' or a 'C'. The symptoms range from very mild and cosmetic deformity to serious discomfort and severe breathing issues. Thanks to modern medicine, a majority of cases can be corrected.

The six main causes and types of scoliosis are:

  • Idiopathic scoliosis. which means there is no specific cause and is the most common. It affects a large number of children, adolescents, and adults.
  • Congenital scoliosis is a malformation caused by improper development of the spine in utero and includes failure of segmentation when parts of the spine fuse, hemivertebra which is when only one side of the vertebrae develops, and fused ribs.
  • Thoracogenic scoliosis whereby the spinal development is asymmetric as a result of radiation treatment of tumors in childhood or congenital heart defect surgeries.
  • Degenerative scoliosis, which is a result of asymmetrical disc degeneration over time, is mild and affects the lumbar spine. This may lead to difficulty standing fully upright and sciatica.
  • Syndromic scoliosis develops due to an underlying disorder like poliomyelitis, Marfan syndrome, and spina bifida.
  • Neuromuscular scoliosis is caused by the spinal cord, brain, and muscular system disorders like Angelman syndrome and cerebral palsy.

  • ""I first came to Atlantic Chiropractic 5 years ago with a pinched nerve in my neck. I was in so much pain, I could not even move my head. Dr. Eric diagnosed the problem almost immediately and confirmed it with the EMG. He set up a treatment plan and told me I probably would not feel significant relief for a good two weeks. I appreciated his thoroughness, expertise, and honesty. As it turned out, I was actually pain free in one week! I always refer my friends to Dr. Eric/Atlantic Chiropractic and Rehabilitation for the most trusted effective chiropractic care.""
