Massaging Out Pain in One of Four Ways

Massaging Out Pain in One of Four Ways

Massage therapy does more than make you feel good -- it can also help rehabilitate an injury, relieve chronic pain and stiffness, and even help you through your pregnancy. Some of the basic techniques include:

  • Swedish – This technique uses light strokes to stimulate surface tissues, loosening superficial muscle tension while enhancing circulation for a feeling of warmth and stress relief. The circulatory boost also helps cells receive oxygen and nutrients while expelling inflammatory substances, thus relieving low back pain, neck pain and other stress-related pain.
  • Deep tissue - This technique goes deeper than a Swedish massage does. We apply more pressure through harder strokes to release deeply-held tension in the muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia. Deep tissue work helps correct the balance of stress hormones in the body while also stimulating the production of oxytocin and serotonin, improving your mood and banishing stiffness. It also helps prevent the formation of adhesions, scar tissue that can restrict muscle motion and prevent full healing.
  • Trigger point - Chronic pain in one part of your body may be coming from another part of your body entirely. This is called referred pain, and the muscle constrictions where the pain originates are called trigger points. By applying pressure precisely to these trigger points, we can help relieve chronic neck pain, low back pain or other muscle issues caused by fibromyalgia and other myofascial conditions.
  • Pregnancy massage - Pregnancy forces the body to undergo some radical alterations, and the resulting weight gain and shift in weight distribution can cause muscle strain, pain and swelling in the extremities. Our chiropractor can prescribe this gentle form of therapy to improve your circulation, relieve pain and reduce fluid buildup, while keeping your muscles strong and flexible in anticipation of the delivery.
